Metheny and Mehldau (Michael Wilson)

Metheny + Mehldau

It used to be common for jazz superstars to team up on albums, like Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong or Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane. Today there are very few jazz musicians who have become household names, so the new collaboration between Gen X pianist Brad Mehldau and legendary guitarist Pat Metheny is making waves. Metheny and Mehldau talk with Kurt Andersen about why they speak each other's language - and why Mehldau hates being compared with the late Bill Evans.

Armstand (Michael Wilson)

American Standard

Bathroom scenes, no matter how funny, can always seem just a tad too intimate. But a new film currently in production called American Standard takes place entirely in real bathrooms, public and private. Andrew Adam Newman recently observed a day of filming, and promised to wash his hands before returning to work

Steven Carter (Counterpoint Press)

Famous Writers School

Steven Carter's new novel Famous Writers School begins innocently enough: a professor places an ad in the back of a literary magazine for a correspondence course in fiction writing. After a motley collection of characters sign up for the class a bizarre mystery unfolds.

Andy Goldsworthy (Dixi Carrillo)

Aha Moment: Andy Goldsworthy

His work isn't made to last -- some of it will start falling apart when the tide comes in, or the sun rises - but the artist Andy Goldsworthy has passionate admirers who find incredible depth in his work. Studio 360's Ave Carrillo, and her mother Dixi, were inspired by Goldsworthy when they wanted to honor the memory of Ave's father, Mario.

I Like You by Amy Sedaris

Amy Sedaris

Imagine if Martha Stewart downed a few highballs and went to town on recipes from Betty Crocker --- you'll begin to get a sense of Amy Sedaris's new book. I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence seems to be a spoof of classic entertaining manuals from the 1950s - but sometimes it's hard to tell when Sedaris is joking. She offers Kurt a few pointers, like why you need to pre-crack the liquor bottles after a funeral and why you shouldn't bathe with frosting.

Appletronica (Helen Woods for Magic and Accident)

Appletronica

Matthew Herbert made a record built entirely of food - or at least the sounds different foods make as they journey from conception to consumption. Trent Wolbe sampled the mix.
