Into the Wild

Click here to view a sideshowIn 1990 Chris McCandless was just out of college. He decided to sell all his possessions, donate the money to charity, then hitchhike to Alaska to live alone in the wilderness. Jon Krakauer’s account of McCandless life and death was the bestseller Into the Wild. This week it comes to the screen, in a movie directed by Sean Penn, starring Emile Hirsch as McCandless. Penn tells Kurt why he was drawn to the story.

On the Road

Jack Kerouac’s novel turned 50 this month and Studio 360 wanted to find out whether the book still speaks to readers. We turned to Hillary Frank and Jonathan Menjivar, newly married radio producers, to go exploring. Turned out Hillary had never read it -- so Jonathan gave her the underlined, scribbled-in copy he got when he was 17. We provoked a little marital tension in the process.

Erik Friedlander

Click here to view a sideshowFor over a decade of summers in the 1960s and 70s, Erik’s dad, the photographer Lee Friedlander, took his family on long road trips across America. The photos Lee took during these trips established him one of the most celebrated photographers of modern America. Erik grew up to be an innovative cellist, and now he’s made a whole album of music inspired by those trips, all performed on solo cello: Block Ice and Propane.

Design for the Real World: Interstate Signs

Click here to view a sideshowOn America’s earliest highways, road signs were hand-painted on wood. When interstate highways became standardized, so did the typeface. But in all sorts of conditions it still looks fuzzy. Graphic designer Don Meeker helped bring highway signage back into focus. Produced by Derek John.

Happiness

Tania Ketenjian recently crossed the country in an old Subaru talking to strangers. She started all of her conversations by asking them what made them happy. She also talked to scholars studying the deceptively simple idea of happiness (including Paul Ekman of UC San Francisco, Daniel Gilbert from Harvard, and Tim Wilson from the University of Virginia). Tania shares her findings.
