David Plowden (Russell Phillips Photography)

David Plowden

Kurt meets up with David Plowden in a city park overlooking Manhattan’s East River, not far from where the photographer grew up. Plowden describes the stoic grain elevators and ferocious steam locomotives he’s captured over the last 50+ years. Many of them are collected in Plowden's striking book Vanishing Point. "Vanishing" because the people and places in it have disappeared from the American Midwest.

I grew up near Carl Scherz Park on the East River in New York's Upper East Side. Was this the park Plowden met with Studio 360? It is referred to as "a New York park." I always find it factually insufficient when reporters neglect to indicate place. This segment about place, should have indicated where the interview occurred. Otherwise, I very much enjoyed it. Thank you.

1/13/08--The three queens from England will sail out of our city today---am especially excited due to the fact that my late mother's first job out of the orphanage was for the Cunard line! your 360 broadcast this morning was superb from end to end! I was most impressed by your interview with the photographer David Plowden---am calling my local bookstore to get a copy---love his passion and talent, and recognition of so many things that have made this country the envy of the world! God bless and keep up the good work---am glad my annual gift to WNYC in New York is so well rewarded! The Taras Bulba & Scranton bits--Great!!

Hi Mark -- It is, indeed, Carl Schurz Park between 84th and 90th Streets, east of East End Avenue. It's a beautiful little park -- but we kept our description brief so as not to belabor the introduction to the true star of the piece, David Plowden. But yes, important information -- glad to clarify.

The interview with David Plowden was fascinating (my wife and I both are photographers), but the violin music played at the conclusion is a piece I'd love to ask you to identify.

Thank you.

Hi Mike -- The music you're looking for is a track called "Laurens Walking" from Angelo Badalamenti's score for the movie "The Straight Story" (RCA Victor). For future reference, we've added a music listing under each segment on the episode page -- just click on "Music" and the info you need should be there.
