Ellen Page (Doane Gregory)

Ellen Page

Click here to view a slideshowThe indie hit "Juno" is up for a few Oscars this weekend. One for its crackling screenplay by the 29 year-old Diablo Cody, and another for its star, 21-year-old Ellen Page. Kurt talks to Page about playing the smart, funny teenager Juno MacGuff, who gets pregnant, then decides to have the baby and give it up for adoption.

I was disappointed when you so easily revealed your own bias in agreeing so quickly and heartily with Ms. Page's perspectives on whether or not the movie is "pro-life" or "pro-choice." Doesn't a journalist (especially on National Public Radio) have an obligation and even a professional interest in maintaining objectivity? Don't you want to be the person who helps me know Ms. Page's viewpoints better without clouding the discussion with your own? Get your own show if you want me to know more about you.

David, from the 360 staff here –- Sure, that interview was about knowing Ellen Page better, and it's a host's job to pull out a guest's viewpoints. But a good interview is a conversation, and that means give and take. Page told us that the "Juno" story was not political, and Kurt pushed that a little bit (saying that "pro-choice" needn't equal "wants an abortion"). She might have agreed or disagreed or something in between. I think if you hear an utterly objective interview, where the host won't put forward any thoughts of his/her own, you're in for some fairly dry listening.
